At an overnight summer camp, Naomi’s direct supervisor, Marissa was given the opportunity to add an additional co-supervisor to her team. After deliberation, Marissa chose Eli. While this addition was beneficial to the campers and counselors, it became evident after a few days that the two supervisors were in a romantic relationship, which induced an uncomfortable dynamic between Naomi, her co-staff, and her supervisors. This information first spread through workplace gossip and was confirmed by Eli and Marissa’s flirtatious and touchy behavior. Gossip also included talk of whether Eli was chosen by Marissa because of their romantic relationship, which made other eligible staff frustrated by this possibility. Talk of their sexual relationship spread to many staff members, and even campers began to guess that this was occurring. Even so, both supervisors tried to hide that they were in a romantic relationship because they knew it would be seen as unprofessional. After a few weeks, staff began to notice some tension between Marissa and Eli, as they had apparently decided to end their romantic relationship. Both Eli and Marissa were making negative comments about each other to Naomi and the rest of her co-staff. At this point, their relationship had still not become public, so all staff had to act as if they did not know this occurred. No one knew whether upper management was aware of their relationship and Marissa and Eli’s romantic relationship was never addressed, nor was it reported by any other staff.
