They will choose one character and a specific moment in the play to complete the empathic task: the empathic response assumes the voice of one character and the task prescribes a particular moment in the play. The empathic assignment tests knowledge, understanding and response. but provides students with the opportunity to engage more imaginatively with the play by assuming a suitable voice’ (that is, the manner of speaking for a specific character) at a particular moment in the play.
