8-1: To expand on my simple linear regression model from last week’s discussion, I am going add another independent variable for this multiple regression model. To continue to look at staff overtime (dependent variable Y) and sick calls (independent variable X), I will include inpatient volume. The inpatient volume will include surgery cases and admits from the ED.

8-2: One example of multiple regression in real life was a study that wanted to measure the maximum surface ozone concentration for the next 24 hours in the greater Athens, Greece area. Multiple linear regression models were adopted to compare with basic meteorological parameters in order to forecast the ozone surface concentration. This study was performed over several years to measure the change in air quality particularly in urban areas. Air pollution needs to be monitored to better understand the negative effects it has on people’s health as well as develop ways to improve air quality in urban areas. Several different statistical methods have been utilized to monitor short term air quality with multiple linear regression models being the most popular. In these studies the dependent variables were both urban and suburban areas which were being compared over the course of a year. The independent variables in these studies were ozone concentration levels, temperature, and wind speed. These models were used to develop predictive ones based on the method of multiple regression analysis against artificial neural networks.

7-1: I think I would benefit most from studying the Chi-Square/Nonparametric testing and linear regression topics for the mid-term exam. These are the major topics that I do not have a complete understanding of. I understand the general concept but don’t fully understand how and when to test the assumptions of those types of tests. Also, I had a hard time finding examples of how to apply them to the real world. Also, I think it will be important for us to identify which test to use in a given business situation.

7-2: I will add my name to the simple linear regression list. I feel relatively comfortable with interval estimation and hypothesis testing, Chi-Square not so much, but linear regression seems important. I think it is an important topic to focus on because it seems to be what the majority of the class needs help with. It seems to be an important topic and concept of the class, so spending some extra time on it could prove to be valuable for everyone.
