Write a 5-page comparative case study in two parts: 1) First, select one Christian and one secular MED or MFI organization 2) Second, select one for-profit and one non-profit MED or MFI organization You are not limited to these, but can choose from one of these examples if you wish (Vision Fund, Opportunity International, Banco Compartamos in Mexico, SKS Microfinance in India, Grameen Bank, BRAC Bank, etc…). The four institutions you use need to be different, i.e. you cannot us Vision Fund for nonprofit and Christian. Research the programs, the values, funding sources, implementation strategies, performance measurements, etc… and describe any philosophical, methodological, practical, conceptual similarities and differences between them. Research can be done thru the internet websites, articles, interviews of leaders, etc…, but also consider contacting someone in their organization and conducting an interview. Your content will be graded based upon ability to identify and articulate similarities and differences between aspects of the institution. As you prepare to write your MFI comparison paper, I wanted to highlight one difference between for-profit and non-profit, THEIR VIEW OF THE CUSTOMER. MED programs have to decide what they will offer the borrower. It’s not just loans. There is savings, insurance, financial training, business training, ‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ and the list goes on. A nonprofit organization would say that the poor are not “financially literate” and don’t know what they need. They force the borrower to be included in the whole program. Consider a parent letting a child choose what they want to eat. The child will choose candy over vegetables every time. A for-profit strategy would say that the customer (borrower) knows what they want/need. Therefore we only provide the services they are willing to pay for. This is how they keep the costs down only providing what is necessary. This is a fundamental difference in approach. This is a research-based paper, so you are going to have to do some digging to find the information necessary to do well. This is a comparison paper, so I’m looking for you to highlight the similarities and differences. Don’t just summarize what they do individually but use your analytical skills to demonstrate your understanding. There are some significant philosophical differences to consider, such as profit motive, whether the loan recipient knows what is best or the organization, whether they target audiences are the same, the ability to scale the program, etc… Textbook: Bussau, D. & Mask, R.
