Discussion Post About Two-Way ANOVA

You have three options to choose from for the Two-Way ANOVA Lab this week: (1) Bystander Apathy, (2) Priming, and (3) Obedience to Authority. We will NOT collect data on ourselves this week. The data will be randomized and provided to you. Please read the study descriptions of each study below. Next, post a discussion with your choice and an explanation of why you chose this option. In addition, provide at least one article that helps you decide what outcome(s) to expect from the study and provide the APA reference so that your peers my find it if they wish. One of the other two options will be used for the Final Data Analysis Exam. You may explain which study would be your choice for the Final Data Analysis Exam. Respond to two other student choices with an explanation of what you like about their post, a question for clarification, and/or a comparison of your article with their article.

Bystander Apathy Study Description

Many instances of people refusing to help others in need have prompted researchers to study what has become known as the bystander effect. For example, Kitty Genovese died after being attacked near her apartment complex even though 38 of her neighbors witnessed the attack. Subjects go through many stages as they observe an event that requires response: (1) noticing the event, (2) interpreting the event as an emergency, (3) feeling responsible for helping, (4) identifying how to respond, and (5) implementing the response. Social psychologists have studied a number of different influences on helping behavior, such as ambiguity, group cohesiveness, and diffusion of responsibility. This study will incorporate two independent variables that are both manipulated: (1) time of day (afternoon vs evening) and (2) number of bystanders (zero vs three). The dependent variable is the time it takes to help.
