Critical Review of the Australian War Memorial. Fieldwork to the Australian War Memorial: On the 23rd of May 2019 you will attend an excursion to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. While you are on the excursion you will complete a 1 hour “We Will Remember Them” tour of the memorial sites and you will have free time to collect data for your Critical Review.

What is a Critical Review?

A critical review is a type of essay which has the purpose of evaluating part of an article, artwork or some kind of work. You are going to complete a Critical review of a memorial site. A critical review requires you to:
1. Accurately summarise information
2. Provide evidence from your fieldwork to justify your point of view.
3. You need to incorporate critical thinking and effective writing skills.

Critical Review Structure

You must include a TITLE for your Critical review. The minimum word count required for your Critical Review is 800 words. See the guide below.

Paragraph 1: Explain the historical significance of the Australian War Memorial. (100 words)

a. Explain the purpose of the Australian War Memorial.

c. Where is it located?
d. Why was it built in that location?
e. Who assisted with the design of the building?

Paragraph 4: Australia’s Involvement in WW2 (150 – 200 words).

a. Explain Australia’s involvement at Kokoda.
b. Demonstrate your understanding of the TWO theatres of war

Paragraph 5: WW2 Primary Evidence (50 words)

a. You must include a photograph you have taken of an artefact from WW2 that you saw at the Australian War Memorial.
b. Explain how this artefact can help historians learn about Australia’s contribution to WW2.

Paragraph 6: Australia’s Involvement in Vietnam (150 – 200 words).

a. Explain why Australia was involved in the Vietnam War.
b. Demonstrate your understanding of guerrilla warfare tactics.

Paragraph 7: The Vietnam War Primary Evidence (50 words)

a. You must include a photograph you have taken of an artefact from the Vietnam War that you saw at the Australian War Memorial.
b. Explain how this artefact can help historians learn about Australia’s contribution to the Vietnam War.

Paragraph 8: Guided Tour Reflection (100 words).

a. Provide an example of a story that your tour guide told.
b. Explain how your tour enhanced your understanding of commemoration and use of symbolisation.
