Critical Thinking: Deductive and Inductive Arguments

I’m working on a philosophy discussion question and need an explanation to help me learn.

Discussion Forum #4 – Deductive and Inductive Arguments

Now that you have read in Chapter 3 about deductively valid and inductively strong arguments, this discussion forum will have you apply some of what you’ve learned. In this forum you will be working on both aspects of what makes a good argument: logic and truth. You will be attempting to show you understand the concepts of logical validity and strength while formulating your own arguments. Then you will be reasoning toward actual truth as we understand the concepts of soundness and cogency.

Remember, as we work in the virtual Hall of Philosophy, we’re all just trying to learn and apply new ideas by rehearsing and practicing, so don’t worry about debating the reasons someone gives. In the Hall of Philosophy we’re never interested in making judgements about individuals who give reasons (you have plenty of time to do that on Twitter), we respect individuals who give reasons, so debate learn and grow!

STEP ONE

Your initial post will consist of two arguments. Each argument should have 3 premises and a conclusion, the conclusions to use are given below. These premises are ones you will come up with on your own and you could choose any premises. Attempt to give premises that could actually be true, note the examples I give below do not, but they are each deductively valid and inductively strong respectively. You will post:

1) A deductively valid argumentwhere the conclusion is either:

Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should be legalized by the federal government.

or

Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should not be legalized by the federal government.

Example: The sale and use of recreational cannabis makes unicorn horns grow stronger. The sale and use of recreational cannabis makes hobbits think more clearly. Anything that makes unicorn horns grow stronger and hobbits think more clearly should be legalized by the federal government. Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should be legalized by the federal government.

AND

2) An inductively strong argument where the conclusion is either:

Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should be legalized by the federal government.

or

Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should not be legalized by the federal government.

Example: The majority of COC students have a positive attitude toward recreational cannabis use. The attitudes of COC students are indicative of those of Americans nationwide. Federal laws should reflect the attitudes of Americans. Therefore, the sale and use of recreational cannabis should be legalized by the federal government.
