Translational research allows the medical community to take the knowledge that is gained from studying a specific patient population and implementing changes in services and options provided to patients in a more expedient timeframe. The goal of translational research is to combine resources, interdisciplinary professionals, techniques, and knowledge gained from studies and trials to improve disease prevention, diagnosis, and therapies as well as to promote health and wellbeing. One example of a quality improvement initiative is the effort to detect and treat Type II Diabetes earlier in patients with risk factors for the disease. Based on the information gathered in the studies, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults with blood pressure greater than 135/80, whether it is treated or untreated, be screened for diabetes. High blood pressure was found to be a significant indicator of risk for diabetes, so much so that it is indicated in the evidence-based resources of the Healthy People 2020 initiatives. (Healthy People 2020, n.d.) Based on findings from multiple studies that have been systematically reviewed, the correlation is compelling enough that diabetic screening for chronically hypertensive patients has the potential to detect the disease before any other symptoms start occurring. Therefore, it would help improve the morbidity of the patient population.
