The process through which information is collected and analyzed to aid in making judgments concerning certain activities, outcomes, and more is referred to as policy evaluation (Barzegar Safari, BahadorI & Alimohammadzadeh, 2020). This process is crucial in any institution since it improves policy adoption, development, implementation, and effectiveness. In health care facilities, registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are better positioned to influence various activities and happenings through multiple policies. This, therefore, makes them one of the most crucial individuals with a unique role in policy evaluation.
The RNs and APRNs have several opportunities to participate in policy reviewing and evaluation. One of them is being in various professional organizations, such as the Emergency Nurses Association. In such an organization, they can ensure that adequate policies protect them from dangers in the emergency areas and make them comfortable at work. The second opportunity is in their work environment (Barzegar Safari, BahadorI & Alimohammadzadeh, 2020). This is an excellent opportunity since they see firsthand what happens and have the ability to change it. For example, if there are policies that do not advocate for patients’ quality care, they can request in writing for a policy review and ensure the right changes are made.
Policy evaluation processes, though they advocate for quality, can be challenging to achieve. For instance, most nurses do not belong to any professional organization opportunity since joining is complex. Another challenge in this opportunity is poor leadership (Turale, & Kunaviktikul, 2019). In such a case, a nurse can suggest a policy review, and the people entitled to take care of that or in leadership ignores it. In the second opportunity of work environment, there can be a challenge of a familiar voice among the nurses. Due to the divided thoughts, deciding to seek change can be difficult, thus making policy evaluation.
To solve these challenges that hinder a smooth policy evaluation process, two strategies can be implemented. The nurses can be trained to understand their roles and work environment (Turale & Kunaviktikul, 2019). This will allow them to seek reviews in case they detect challenges. The second strategy, according to Turale and Kunaviktikul (2019), is ensuring good leadership. For instance, leaders should be trained and receive emphasis on the importance of leading by example. This will result in an informed nursing team with a common goal to ensure quality in all that they do.
