Write an essay persuading people to feed the homeless and how it’s good. For this essay, you will take your research project from the proposal stage based on the results of your exploratory narrative to a formal, conclusive paper. Your aim is to write persuasively about your proposed solution to a specific problem for a specific audience that can either take direct action and/or shift their opinion toward your conclusion from their currently held beliefs. You should end up with an persuasive essay that presents a problem, proposes a solution to that problem, and justifies the solution. You may write either a “practical proposal,” which addresses a particular audience about a problem that the audience has the power to change, a “policy proposal,” which addresses a more general audience
on some public issue, or a “classical argument” in which you try to persuade an audience to change their view of the issue from their currently held beliefs and/or take action to improve the situation. Whichever type of proposal you choose, your paper must cite at least eight credible sources, four of which must be available via the FIU Library. While this essay can make use of the sources you found for your exploratory narrative, you must also use at least four new relevant and reliable sources. In arguing for your proposed solution, you’ll need to present your position as a claim-with-reason thesis and support that thesis using the tools of argument (e.g. arguments from principle, consequences, and precedent, as well as backing for your warrant; don’t worry, we’ll talk about what all of these things are in class). You will also need to address relevant counterarguments. Doing so not only strengthens your own argument, but demonstrates that you are part of a truth-seeking debate community by recognizing the arguments of others. The writing style should be objective. You may use the first person “I,” but try to limit its use to relevant passages in which you discuss your experience (if any) with the issue that you are writing about. Do not report the subjective process of your thinking and your research as you did in the exploratory narrative. Only report findings, insights, evidence, conclusions, and so forth.
As stated in The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, “for every proposal there is always an alternative course of action, including doing nothing.”
Your task as a writer is:
1) demonstrate that a significant problem exists;
2) propose a solution to the problem; and
3) justify the solution, showing how the benefits outweigh the costs and that the proposed solution will fix the problem better than alternative solutions would.
Your introduction should get your audience’s attention (possibly by appealing to pathos), provide background on the conversation you are joining, and clearly state the claim you intend to support. The body of your argument should appeal to logos by presenting reasons and evidence in support of your position, as well as appeal to ethos by responding to opposing views (rebutting the counterargument). You may also appeal to pathos within your body by appealing to the values and beliefs of your audience.
