Consider what your readers are likely to know and think about the concept, what you might want them to learn about it, and whether you can research it sufficiently in the time you have. You are encouraged to read and review the Starting Points, Explaining a Concept section (150-151), and the assignment given on exploring a topic from late last week. 1) Pick a CONCEPT that interests you. 2) Start to research: use credible resources only. Check into databases. See what the research provides you to help you determine a specific lens (lenses) OR decide on an approach first to help you narrow your focus for researching. Be willing to shift between these two research approaches. Be very careful with your research and notation: any misuse of research or information will be considered plagiarism and a failing grade will be assigned. Research with a paper and pencil handy- take notes, document where the information comes from, build your Works Cited as you research. Do not wait until the end and attempt to ″go back and add sources in later.″ That is not a wise nor careful way to utilize the works of others. You are required to have a separate Works Cited page using MLA formatting and style. 3) NO PLACE IN YOUR PAPER WILL YOU PROVIDE A DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF YOUR CONCEPT. YOUR JOB is to develop and explain the concept through a lens or various lenses and examples. The audience should be able to determine and understand with clarity the definition of the concept you are offering up. Dictionary definitions are cop-outs. Think and interact with your concept. 4) Decide how you will organize, transition, and incorporate sources- WRITE. 5) MLA formatting and style is used for this paper: set up of headers, heading, Works Cited, and in-text incorporation of research. PAPER LENGTH IS 2-3 PAGES. MINIMUM IS 2 FULL PAGES. Works Cited will be a separate page and not part of the page count. Please limit your max pages to 3 or just over.
