Wide participation of women in terrorism

Students of terrorism are often surprised at the wide participation of women in terrorism. We typically think of young, disaffected males as those most likely to engage in violence against civilians and noncombatants. Statistically, this is not true: women are just as likely to blow up a school bus full of children for a political reason as any man. In addition, there are many areas in the world where child soldiers are common: teenage (and younger) boys and girls who willingly engage in combat, suicide bombings, and other forms of violence on behalf of terrorist organizations. It is important to explore the reasons behind this.
