Week 3’s Journal Club debate perspectives

Being a member of the club. Everyone in the course, including the instructor, is a member of the journal club. As members, everyone has a responsibility to share and debate perspectives regarding the week’s articles. Please remember to participate and contribute to this week’s journal club!

YOUR GOALS FOR THIS CLUB MEETING

Your overarching goal is to host a discussion focused on one debatable point found in the articles. However, hosting a discussion is not as simple as tossing out a question and having people argue. You need to prepare and facilitate a discussion!

STEP 1. PREPARE FOR THE DEBATE

It is essential to understand the materials for this week’s journal club. Prepare by:
Producing 1-2 paragraph summaries for each article. (https://t.ly/6rM2l provides excellent advice on summarizing articles.)
Identifying one debatable point within each article.

STEP 2. CHOOSE THE DEBATE TOPIC AND QUESTION

Step 1 had you summarize each article and find debatable points. Choose one debatable point and transform it
into:
Three questions encouraging you to explore the debatable point. Be sure to address the questions in your notes!
Notes regarding your perspective on the debatable point.
Notes regarding two opposing perspectives to round out your appreciation of the debatable point.

STEP 3. CONSOLIDATE

Compile essential information into an APA formatted document. The document should contain:
Summaries for each article and their debatable points from Step 1.
The debatable point and all three perspectives from Step 2.
APA-formatted citations and references, as needed.

STEP 4. HOST THE DISCUSSION!

Using a forum posting:
Provide a brief overview of this week’s articles.
Present the debatable point and your perspective of the point.
Ask peers to review the document and for their perspective(s) regarding the debatable point.
Share the document from Step 3. (Attach it to the post).
Remember to return to journal club and keep the discussion vibrant and alive! You have a responsibility to share and debate perspectives regarding the week’s articles. Be sure to involve all participants, ask questions advancing the discussion, and summarize the discussion (as needed).

RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

The university recommends storing and summarizing journal club discussions in your Evernote notebook. The discussions and their sources may be useful during future courses and your dissertation!
