Watch the documentary Virunga (2014) on Netflix as part of this assignment

You’ll need to watch the documentary Virunga (2014) on Netflix as part of this assignment.*After viewing the film, assess some of the moral controversies raised by the attempt to drill for oil in Virunga National Park. How might Baxter, Taylor and Schmidtz, respectively, respond to the issues that you decide to highlight? How would they determine what ought to be done in this case? (Although the oil company in the film decided to end its efforts in the park, it seems possible that the same company or another company might try again in the future. And, closer to home, there are current attempts to open up areas of the Grand Canyon to mining. ) Whose view or views do you support, and why? Make sure to elaborate on/defend your claims.

Stick to the assigned texts by Baxter , Taylor Environmental Ethics, pages 102 – 113 , and PDF’s for Books 4 and 6 of Respect for Nature , and Schmidtz Environmental Ethics, p. 114 – 122 , as well as Schmidtz EE, p. 220 – 227 ( Natural Enemies ). This latter text should help you clarify Schmidtz’s view s , especially in connection with Virunga.
If you quote Baxter, Taylor, or Schmidtz, provide a simple citation. Just use parentheses at the end of the quote and include the relevant page number: As Taylor reminds us, “…no sharp line can be drawn between natural ecosystems and those that are not natural (p. 5).”

*Netflix has exclusive rights to this film, which means that it is the main streaming source, and it has not issued a DVD version yet. On Netflix, there are two films with ‘ Virunga ’ in the title, both by the same director. The film you need to watch is simply called Virunga (2014) . The film that you should ignore is called Virunga: Gorillas in Peril (2015) . This second film chronicles the making of Virunga .Also, I did notice other websites (not Hulu, Amazon, or I-tunes) that stream the film, but I don’t recommend.
