In summary, you will be completing seven steps in the exercise, following the Caribbean Epidemiological Center (CAREC) through their efforts to diagnose, monitor and treat a public health outbreak of Salmonella in Trinidad and Tobago. Step 2 (Develop System to Monitor Problem): Summarize the problems of the existing surveillance system at the beginning of the incident, and what was done to improve it.
Step 3 (Analyze data from Surveillance System): Summarize the main findings of CAREC’s analysis of data from the improved Surveillance System to characterize the incidences of Salmonella in Trinidad & Tobago over time.
Step 4 (Determine source of outbreak): Summarize the Case-Control study that was conducted to determine the source of Salmonella outbreak. How was the study designed? What was the outcome – that is, what did CAREC determine those who had Salmonella were exposed to that those who did not have Salmonella were not exposed to? Explain how this was determined through the results of the case-control study, referring to statistical and epidemiological quantities (odds ratio, p-values).
Step 5 (Confirm and clarify source of problem): Short paragraph (2 – 3 sentences).
Step 6 (Respond to problem, Implement Control Measures): Short paragraph (2 – 3 sentences).
Step 7 (Follow-up / Monitor Control Measures): Short paragraph (2 – 3 sentences).
