This course introduces counselors/educators to the structure and process of group counseling. Basic principles, techniques, and types of organizational procedures for group and counselor activities are reviewed. Opportunities exist for class members to observe their own behavior and that of others through role-playing, videotaping, and group exercise. Students will be introduced to the topics through classroom lectures and interactive exercises.
DOE subject matter knowledge covered:

1. Knowledge of strategies used for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, the spectrum of mental illnesses, and violence in Pre-12 students.

2. Group counseling and group leadership

3. Development of skills for consultation with parents, teachers, and administrators
