Initial Post: Nursing and Policy Evaluation
Nurses have the advantage of being experts at evaluation. It is innate for nurses because it is an integral part of the nursing process. After an intervention is implemented, nurses reassess and evaluate its outcome. Milstead and Short comment on how this directly translates to the push for nurses to also become involved with policy evaluation (Jeri A. Milstead, Nancy M. Short & Jeri A. Milstead, Nancy M. Short, 2017). Much like nurse involvement with policymaking, nurse involvement with policy evaluation can be just as crucial. One opportunity for nurses to participate in policy review is being a part of the American Nursing Association (ANA). Briefly, the ANA is the largest professional nursing organization in the country, and they are often involved with collecting research data to disperse to lawmakers during the process of policy implementation. One example is the ANA providing data collection to lawmakers during the evaluation of the Affordable Care Act (Jeri A. Milstead, Nancy M. Short & Jeri A. Milstead, Nancy M. Short, 2017, p. 117). Another opportunity for nurses to become involved with policy evaluation is a career in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC consists of many different disciplines. WEEK 9 MAIN POST
Healthcare professionals, specifically nurses, have a vital role in assisting the community get the best healthcare possible. As nurses, we have the opportunity to become involved in the policy review process either formally or informally (Milstead & Short, 2019). Nurses can aid in structuring patient care through shaping policies that affect patient outcomes.
In last week’s discussion, we identified two opportunities for nurses to become involved in policymaking. This week I will be discussing two opportunities that currently exist for a RN/APRN to participate in policy review. The registered nurse can help partake in policy review by being involved in a committee at their place of employment. By doing this, the nurses voice is able to be heard and hopefully their insight is able to influence the policy review process…………………………………………………………………….
