Nurses can actively participate in policy reviews by conducting health policy research. Ellen Becker and Edward (2016) define this as “research that informs, characterizes, explains, or tests hypotheses to inform the development of policies that advance the health of the nation.” This can be accomplished through a variety of methods, but the overall goal is to evaluate programs or policies and determine if the outcomes matched the intent and by doing so communicate the findings to stakeholders (Ellen Becker & Edward, 2016).
Another opportunity for nurses to participate in policy review is by joining and participating a professional nursing organization such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) or National League for Nursing (NLN ) evaluate and provide evidence-based information to legislators regarding various policies affecting healthcare (Milstead & Short, 2019). By becoming active in one of these organizations nurses can participate in the research and evaluation of policies that have been implemented and report the analysis.
