For Project #1, you performed a close reading and rhetorical analysis of one of the language-related articles we discussed in class and an associated popular article; in this way, you practiced examining a conversation between two authors. Now, for Project #2, you will choose a research topic related to any of the issues discussed in either of the articles you analyzed for Project #1 (or a different topic of your choosing), and you will conduct extensive research that includes scholarly as well as popular perspectives on the issue. In the words of Graff & Birkenstein (2014), you must become thoroughly familiar with what “they say” before you can produce a convincing “I say.” As with Project #1, you will not need to develop an argument for Project #2;
instead, after you have read a variety of articles, you will choose six articles that offer the most valuable insights into your topic and present your research in the form of an annotated bibliography.
What is an Annotated Bibliography?
An annotated bibliography (AB) differs from a reference page in one major way – rather than simply providing citations for the sources you have collected, you will supplement each citation with an annotation that describes the source, evaluates it, and explains its potential value for your final research paper (Project #3).
An AB generally has two purposes: (1) to describe your research and the existing conversations about your topic and (2) to provide a path for other scholars to pursue their own research and contribute to the same conversations. The goal of this particular assignment is for you to develop a broad and deep understanding of a subject – in particular, the conversations surrounding your chosen subject (not just the “facts”) – so that you can eventually write a nuanced argumentative essay about that subject (Project #3).
What Form Should This Annotated Bibliography Take?
Before you present your annotations, you will provide an introduction to your AB. In this introduction, which must be at least 300 words long, you will:
1) reflect on your research process for Project #2,
2) explain how your understanding of your topic has grown since Project #1,
3) briefly describe the scholarly and popular conversations about your topic that you have been exploring, and
