Reflect on the relationship between Catholicism and USA

For most of the nineteenth century, and much of the twentieth century, the catholic church grew mainly by immigration. Most Catholics lived in enclaves or ” ghettos” set apart from the US cultural mainstream. But by the second half of the twentieth century, and especially after 1960, Catholics moved into US mainstream and in doing so they embraced their identities as “Americans.” However, in recent decades, as the identity of Catholics has become weaker, certain voices in the past and present have argued that a vibrant, authentic Catholic identity requires challenging the ways of the US political, economic and cultural mainstream.
