Health workers, especially nurses in the United States have a significant influence on the American society. Nurses’ influential power stems from their heightened interactive career with a large population of the society and as a result, they discern numerous issues engulfing the society. Smith (2014) postulates that the nursing community constitutes a vital portion of the U.S. population with the potential of advocating for changes in legislation and politics of the country. The American society continues to experience income inequality, and this is one of the critical issues affecting the present society. Therefore, it is possible that the influence of nurses would help in the enforcement of legislation essential in addressing income inequality in a manner that establishes a balance of citizens’ incomes in respect to their respective daily jobs (Grundy, 2013). 

Several difficulties continue to be observed within the country due to limited people’s payments. For instance, many citizens’ purchasing power remains low since they do not have all it takes to cater for all the necessities and thus are constantly constrained financially. Thus, the actions of nurses in advocating for income inequality would help lessen the imbalance and enhance the decency and quality of people’s lives as required by the American Dream.

More than once, American citizens have found themselves in a phenomenon where their compensations do not reflect their quality of work or the time spent on their workplace duties. In other words, there is a perfect direct relationship between people’s work and their rewards. Therefore, it is common to discover that many people spend extended hours offering their services to their employers yet are subjected to limited payment. Moreover, some engage in overtime duties and still are not rewarded accordingly and hence conflicting the normalcy of employment terms and conditions. Secondly, the different institutions demonstrate different means of remuneration despite the commonality like work. As a result, employees in one firm are likely to significantly earn more or less than their counterparts in another company. The existence of such incidences makes the underpaid workers feel like their services are despised in the society because they cannot be compensated on a similar standard to those delivering same functions as they do. Besides, the nursing profession experiences such occurrences with certain nurses receiving huge amounts of compensation while others’ payments are so reduced that they find challenging to cater for all their primary necessities. In point of fact, income inequality is a pervasive issue in the U.S. economy, and the influence of nurses is necessary for advocating for the adoption of corrective legislative actions.

Even though consequences of income inequality are devastating to the economy such as the widening of the gap in people’s socioeconomic classes and reduced citizens’ saving power, nurses require a well-calculated strategy to ensure that they are not only heard but their intervention voices also get implemented. Therefore, for nurses to effectively push for changes in remuneration, they first require the presence of an attorney. The attorney’s present purposes to provide nurses with the legal advice, as well as essential and relevant guidelines on all the segments concerning the establishment of legislation. Also, the attorney helps the nurses in underlining areas that necessitate changes and emphasis to ensure the presentability of an inclusive bill. According to Montalvo and Byrne (2016), legal mentorship improves nurses’ involvement in politics. Additionally, the nursing community can incorporate the assistance of other agencies such as those fighting for human rights and rights of workers. In fact, making such additional and collaborative efforts propels the accomplishment of the nurses’ intervention to a greater height. Although employers will seem pissed by such a move since it will demand them to release more money, it is an effective means of creating egalitarianism in the American labor market.

Equality ensures progress of an economy in all aspects, and thus the bill mentioned above would function as an enhancement of balance in the U.S. labor market. The passing of a such a bill into law would generate pleasure to the American citizens because it would make sure that every employer on the American soil rewards their employees according to the nature and characteristics of their work. Besides, employees’ energy and time would be adequately compensated. Therefore, it is progressive within a society when employers pay workers in a manner that portrays a direct association with their labor and nurses can help in the realization of this dream.


What might policy issues drive nurses to lobby Congress and/or get involved in campaign politics? 

From my point of view, we as a nurse can understand today’s health care system is in trouble and in need of change. The pieces of knowledge of many nurses practicing in the real world of healthcare are motivating them to take on some form of an encouragement role to influence a change in policies, laws, or regulations that govern the larger health care system. This type of advocacy necessitates walking beyond their own practice setting and into the less familiar world of policy and politics, a world in which many nurses do not feel prepared to operate effectively. Successful policy advocacy depends on having the power, the will, the time, and the energy, along with the political skills needed to ‘play the game’ in the legislative arena. Successful advocacy to bring about changes in the healthcare system demands access to the resources of power, will, time, and energy, along with necessary political skills. In an effort to encourage more registered nurses to take action in the public health policy arena, this article describes the role of the nurse as healthcare policy advocate; identifies the power bases available to nurses as they assume an advocacy role to make changes in today’s health care system; discusses the policy process in the legislative arena; presents strategies for effective action; and lists selected resources to help develop the confidence and skills to shape and influence health policy.

What strategies might nurses use to have their voices heard? 

It’s time to vote again, and every nurse knows that during a career, and sometimes during a single day, nursing professionals wear a hundred hats: caregiver, administrator, technician, troubleshooter, liaison, sounding board, and countless others. In a course bearing the innocuous name “Transforming the Nation’s Health,” some candidates to the Congress knows how to do that. “Nursing is the largest workforce in all the health care professions,” says Short, an associate professor at the School of Nursing. “We have the most direct contact with patients. We have a unique perspective. But we have recognized for decades that our voice tends not to be heard. Some of that is our own acculturation; for a long time, we tended to take a back seat. But we’re trying, as a profession, to change that.” Health care policies established at the local, state and national levels touch everything that nurses do: the scope and delivery of care, billing and insurance, patient safety, workplace conditions, nutrition and wellness programs, record-keeping and accountability, drug guidelines, Medicare and Medicaid participation, and so on.
