One of the main assessments for this course is a critical review essay engaging the arguments made in a book of your choice on a nature-society issue. You may choose a book on the list below, or another one that is similar. If you choose from outside this list, please bring the book to the instructor or teaching assistant for approval. The main factor for consideration is whether the author is prescribing some approach to nature society relations over others in a way that is of relevance to the course materials.
Your task will be to analyze the argument in the book via the lens of one of the approaches described in the first part of the book (Population and scarcity, markets and commodities, etc.). In the light of this analysis, you will respond to the author’s argument by considering elements from another perspective. Your response may be positive or negative, but it must demonstrate a thorough understanding of how the other approach relates to the matter at hand, and whether its consideration strengthens or undermines the author’s argument. You can draw on additional sources to support your argument, and make sure to cite those accordingly, but you should not need more than five sources in addition to the book of your choice and the course textbook.
This is not a research paper, but an essay in which you formulate your own argument to convince the reader based on your interpretation and understanding of course materials.
