MDSA01 introduces students to key terms and concepts in media studies and provides an overview of theoretical and critical understandings of media. Students develop their understanding of the political, economic, social and cultural contexts in which mediated images and texts are produced, distributed and consumed. This assignment sets out two specific and connected tasks. The first task is to identify, define and discuss the significance of one concept explored in our course that is important to the field of media studies. This concept should be drawn directly from the textbook or lecture (please specify the chapter or lecture you found it in), and should be clearly identifiable in either a single word or a very short phrase. Ideally, it will be a concept you’ve found personally interesting. Your explanation and discussion of this concept must draw upon TWO relevant scholarly sources found in the UofT Libraries (either online scholarly journal articles or academic books). Use these sources to help discuss and elaborate upon your concept using examples of how the authors explain and use the concept. The second part of this assignment asks you to connect the concept you’ve chosen to a specific and clearly identified upper-level course (either B, C or D-level) in UTSC’s Media Studies program that you may wish to take later in your studies. In your explanation of this connection consider questions such as how the concept is relevant to this particular course and how the concept applies to the topics you’re likely to study in this course.
