A Leader’s role is to be able to drive the organization toward a vision, mission, or objective. Sometimes context defines the leader and the role they play. Leadership is about the context of their worlds and how effective they are able to make a difference. One can be a great leader in the context of an organization while being poor individually. The scanning, creativity, or learning can play a significant role in how leader and leadership evolves.
One of the roles a leader can play in an organization is to strategically lead the organization its mission. It means taking the right steps and knowing the right direction in the market space the organization is in. Here are some scanning actions leader can take:
1. Trends – Take internal and external data to analyze the market to determine the trend(s) that can affect the organization.
2. Technology – As new technology and innovation are taking place, determine how it will impact your organization internally and externally. There must be a process in the organization to help detect the new technologies and turn that into an advantage. Ashton, B. (2020) suggests that “Incorporating the full set of technology intelligence (TI) practices” can help provide an edge for managing the new technologies. These practices include: analytical, actionable, and protected processes.
3. Customers – Analyze the customer. Determine how an organization can better serve its customers. Amazon emphasizes 11 leadership principles of which the number one is customer obsession. “Leaders start with the customer and work backward. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers (Amazon’s Global Career Site, n.d.).
4. Competition – The leader should also need to keep an eye on the competition. Not only knowing what is your advantage but also understanding the competitor’s strength can help plan and design an effective strategy to beating the competition.
Ability to anticipate the future is core to the survival of the organization. Scanning and learning are tools that can be used systematically to looks at the data and identify opportunities internal as well external to the organization. The best way leader can do is to empower the followers to always be proactive. The leader should provide the resources and freedom necessary to allow the individuals in the organization to go search and analyze and be creative. Again, one of Amazon’s leadership principle is to “invent and simplify” that is “Leaders expect and require innovation and invention from their teams and always find ways to simplify” (Amazon’s Global Career Site, n.d.). The employee must be able to think big and make decisions and actions in a timely manner.
