A healthy work environment is paramount for every employee to function effectively and better patient care outcomes. It is an atmosphere that is safe, satisfying, and empowering, a place of mental, social, and physical welfare, supporting the best safety and health. An institution’s most unsafe health issue is a communication failure (Laureate Education, 2018).

The Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory’s environmental assessment results were 30 for my workplace, signifying that my workplace is very unhealthy (Clark, 2015). Some of the concerns are lack of adequate and transparent communication, employees not being treated with dignity and fairness, fear of speaking up because of intimidation and retaliation from the managers and supervisors, and lack of respect among employees. Excellent communication and exclusive interpersonal relationships result in improved patient outcomes (Laureate Education, 2018). Irrespective of the fact that I completed Clark’s Healthy Inventory, I know that Civility’s workplace level is unhealthy from my observation. In healthcare, Incivility could result in poor patient care, amplified medical cost, and unsafe working conditions (Clark, 2015).

How civil is my workplace

Porath et al. (2015) stated that Civility is a behavior involving good manners and regard for others in the workplace, within workplace rules for respect. Based on Clark’s Healthy Workplace inventory, my workplace is not Civil, which is not a good thing and needs improvement for the safety of the patient, employee, and the organization. Impoliteness in healthcare can result in unsafe working conditions, poor patient care, and increased medical costs (Clark, 2015).

Incivility in my workplace

According to Clark’s Healthy Workplace Inventory assessment, my workplace is not civil. Also, my observations of what is going on at my workplace confirm it too. There is a lot of drama and dysfunction at my workplace, which is not healthy for anyone. At my workplace, leaders are not personally and continuously demonstrating the organizational values. Other staff; employees do not respect each other and do not listen to one another’s perspective. Feedback at my workplace is very poor and discouraging; employees are afraid to speak up because of fear of intimidation and retaliation from the managers and supervisors. When a workplace is not civil, it will be challenging for employees to function effectively, resulting in poor patient care, low job satisfaction, and a high turnover rate.
