INSTRUCTIONS

Write a research proposal that will begin to lay the ground work for your final paper. While the
work towards your final paper may present you with an evolution of this initial proposal, your
WP2 research proposal should accomplish the following:

State the primary research question driving your inquiry. Explain why this question is an interesting, problematic, and significant contribution to academic conversation. In other words, so what?
State your working thesis (the tentative answer to your primary research question).
Begin to establish the context or situation for your inquiry by doing the following:
o Defining the issues or debates related to your topic
o Describing the different positions in this debate
o Summarizing academic and public conversations about your topic (who is saying what?)
o Identifying a possible “they say” to which you are responding
o Considering who is invested in this question (who cares?)
o Stating your intended consequences (what you want readers to think, feel, or do as a result
of your inquiry)
Report on the research you have already conducted and your plans for additional research. What key sources are you planning on having to use in this paper?
Describe the challenges you anticipate and how you plan to overcome them. What general or specific counterarguments will you have to address?
