EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY COMPARISON PAPER. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to compare one ideal in current rhetoric in education policy and philosophy with historical educational thinkers/philosophy and thematic ideas addressed in the course.

Part 1:
1. Read the article by Frankenberg, Siegel-Hawley, and Wang (2011) “Choice without equity: Charter school segregation”.
2. Summarize the main points by the authors and their conclusions about schools choice programs. Provide evidence (direct quotes from the chapter) to support your summary.
3. Determine your stance on the authors’ ideas (do you agree/disagree AND WHY and such).

Part 2:
1. The historic thinkers from the course are Horace Mann, John Dewey, and Paulo Freire. You are to identify their philosophical beliefs based upon our course readings and other internet sources as needed. Use the following questions to help guide you in your analysis (these are suggestions/helpful ideas):
a. What does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) believe is the purpose of public education?
b. How does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) view the role of students in public education?

c. How does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) view the role of teachers in public education?
d. How does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) view the role of schools in society?
e. How does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) view the relationship between government and education?
f. How does each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) believe school should be structured?

2. What would each person (Mann, Dewey, Freire) say about the charter school/school choice movement in general?
3. This section may require additional research into the authors. We are reading sections of their work, so you may need to do some additional research.
Response/Final Paper:
1. Determine how the historical thinkers of Mann, Dewey, and Freire would respond to the research of Frankenberg, Siegel-Hawley, and Wang.
2. Address the points you made in Part 1 with the philosophies you determined in Part 2 to write a response to Frankenberg, Siegel-Hawley, and Wang.
3. It may be helpful for you to consider as if Mann, Dewey and Freire were having a conversation with Frankenberg, Siegel-Hawley, and Wang in their responses. You may consider some of the following ideas:
a. What ideas of the past are congruent with the ideas of the present and the future?
b. What ideas of the past are in conflict with the ideas of the present and the future?
c. How could the ideas of the past be molded to address the needs of the present and future?
d. How do the themes/ideas from our text connect (historically or currently or in the future)?

4. The FINAL entire paper should be formatted, corrected and turned in as follows:
