As nurses, we must understand that we have the capacity and are responsible for influencing the current trends in the health care delivery systems. It is important that policies are created to incorporate the appropriate standards for the delivery of care and make the necessary adjustments for that care to occur ( Burke, 2016). Through policy review, nurses can influence standard practices and ensure that the quality of care given is nothing short of excellent.
One opportunity that exists for nurses to actively participate in policy review is by lobbying; by lobbying, nurses stand a chance to influence the actions and decisions of government officials or legislators regarding health care matters. In 2018 nurses in South Carolina lobbied at the senate-house in an attempt to update South Carolina laws regarding Advance Practice and to support the bill to make Assault and Battery of Health Care Professionals and Tax credit for professionals a Law (South Carolina Nurse, 2018). These bills are still waiting to be enacted; however, South Carolina nurses continue to lobby against laws that are not favorable to nurses. We cannot underestimate the impact of lobbying, and even if a law has been enacted; it can still be revised or amended. Also, an article by Weston (2020) stated that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Zealand Nurses Organization (NZNO) had to lobby hard and long enough to get the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all the nurses who need them and ensuring that they maintained easy access to the supply of PPE to the nurses of New Zealand (Weston, 2020). This demand for change will create a lasting effect on health care practices in New Zealand.
