Discussion Board 4 Science & religion: One key feature of science is that theories are modified, discarded, updated, and validated as scientists make new discoveries. This means that what was considered true yesterday may not be “true” today. Some see this as a weakness of the scientific method and suggest that it makes scientific findings untrustworthy. In contrast, religious truths are viewed as reliable because they are unchanging. However, others take the opposite view. The changing nature of science is seen as a strength because it allows science to continually improve our understanding of the truth. In contrast, religious truths are viewed as untrustworthy because they do not change when confronted with new information.
Are you more convinced of a “truth” that has changed repeatedly over time or one that has remained unchanged for centuries? Think of an example of a scientific truth that has recently changed. (Try to think of an example that another student has not already written about.) Did this change cause you to become skeptical of the revised “truth” or even the scientific method in general? Why or why not? Some argue that science is the most reliable source of truth, as demonstrated by its ability to make reliable predictions about the world around us. In other words, we can trust science because it “works.” Is this a good approach for evaluating truth? Can this criterion also be applied to religion truths, as well? Explain.
