Paper details

Working thesis idea : Is it that both Amiri Baraka and Gary Snyder addressed the problems of the twentieth century in compelling but different ways; while Synder’s work is clam and serene, Baraka’s is controversial.
Main question to address:
“What specific problems do they address?”.
What do we gain by juxtaposing these in particular?
Lots of poets addressed the problems of the twentieth century what made their work standout from others?

The essay has to be developed according to a comparison and contrast structure, with an emphasis on difference. Therefore, it needs to establish a solid basis for putting these poets in conversation.

Some Possible Sources

Baraka, Amira. The System of Dante’s Hell (Akashi Classics: Renegade Reprint Series) Paperback – February 16, 2016
In this novel which is an autobiographical novel about the coming of age of a young, Black, male homosexual. He struggles with issues of self-doubt and shame. In this novel, he says things about gays that are harsh and extreme. Yet when reading you cannot help but feel, a sense of sorrow for him and what he is going through.
In these stories we can see a mood of revolutionary disorder, summoning an universe in which an African-American underground which in many ways is dangerous yet it does exist. In his work, you can see his views both racial and political. In this novel, we see that he is cruel and searing in his dislike of gays. This is somewhat interesting as he himself is gay. Just as many of his time did, he covers it up and will not admit to it. When reading this you can somewhat tell by the physical description of the character that is matches up with his own appearance. The dates and places in this novel match up with the where’s and when’s of his own life.
My utilization of this novel in my paper is to show how Amiri Baraka’s style of writing is somewhat angry in nature maybe because of his political activist views.
Goodyear, Dana. “Zen Master Gary Snyder and the Art of Life.” Https://Www.newyorker.com/Magazine/2008/10/20/Zen-Master, 20 Oct. 2008, www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/10/20/zen-master.
This article in the New Yorker will be use to show how Gary Snyder’s work as a Beat Generation poet seem to resonate throughout the movement and how his work differ from that of Baraka. This source will also be used to show his practice of mediation shined through his writing. Snyder’s style of writing although it focused on the concerns of the environment, his poems were calmer and serene which is a big difference that you see between these two poets.
