Describe the distribution of Pertussis across the United States for the year 2012.

OBJECTIVES

In the 21 st century, sources of health surveillance data have expanded exponentially. The purpose of this assignment is to develop search skills and analytic approaches to describing the epidemiology of a condition. On completion of the project, the student should be able to identify local, national, and international health surveillance data sources, extract surveillance data on a particular condition, and explain the quality of the sources and accuracy of the data presented.

BACKGROUND

Pertussis (whooping cough) is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Although a vaccine has been available for decades, outbreaks are common for a variety reasons. Vaccine compliance is not sufficient for disease elimination, vaccine effectiveness is relatively low (70-90%), and person to person transmission is high.

ASSIGNMENT

Describe the distribution of Pertussis across the United States for the year 2012. Include geographic variations, age incidence or prevalence, deaths versus morbidity, gender rates, income variations, and any other disease specific risk factors which might be important for control of future outbreaks. Data should be presented primarily in tables, charts, or maps. If materials are copied directly from a source, you must credit the source. If data are taken from sources and arranged in your own tables or charts, you must use references or footnotes as appropriate.
Important in this assignment is to describe how you found your sources, how the sources collected the data, and your opinion on the accuracy of the data you are presenting. Also comment on whether certain sources may have over or under reported based on their methodology.
