Current Events Sociology-Race and Ethnicity
Title CURRENT EVENTS #2-SOCIOLOGY-RACE AND ETHNICITY
Find one current event in the news that you can show evidence of from a reliable internet media source or magazine that directly relates to the concepts and theories being studied that week in class.
Students should write a two to three page paper on the event. You must include the current event with the paper. Each paper should:
1. Use Headings (such as Introduction and Conclusion, body paragraphs should include meaningfuls heading that demonstrates what is to come).
2. Begin with an introduction that outlines the news event/article in detail, use past tense. Your introduction should be a short synopsis of the content of the video or article. This should only be a short paragraph with a minimum five sentences. Need to provide the title of the article at the beginning. What the article was about, what was the message it was trying to convey and what did they argue? This should not be a play by play of what happened, but more why does what happened matter. Look up the definition of the word summary. Make sure to have a Thesis statement!!!!!
3. Demonstrate how the content presented in the Chapters in an academic settings connects to events that happen in the world around us. The writer must be very specific about what makes the current event similar to the material in the class that week. I am looking for you all to think sociologically, not simply saying this news story is about gender and therefore it is related to the topic in class about gender.
a. You should demonstrate clear critical thought
b. Connect the content thoughtfully. Need to explain carefully the concept such as Racism, theory, ideas from the Chapter then show how it connects to the article you chose.
c. Connect the work in at least two ways to the course material that week.
d. Only connect to the current week’s chapter. Class discussions should not be used as a connection, focus on the textbook.
4. End with a conclusion, summarize.
5. Reference the location of the material from the book by indicating the Chapter and page number
