For this discussion post, I chose H.R. 3537 Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act. The act will allow companies who are researching ALS and similar types of diagnoses the ability to make their drugs accessible to patients who suffer from those illnesses while the drugs are still in trials. This act will also provide grants from the FDA to further support research and development of drugs for severely debilitating neurodegenerative diseases. The bill is most likely to impact those living with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other similar types of diagnoses. The sponsor is Mike Quigley who is Representative for Illinois’s 5th congressional district and a Democrat. There are an amazing 330 Cosponsors (186 Democrats, 144 Republicans). The committees assigned to this bill (House Committee on Energy and Commerce: Subcommittee on Health) sent it to the House or Senate on November 17, 2021. My question for the class is- Have you heard of this bill prior to this discussion? I chose this because I had heard of the bill after reading an article about someone who was diagnosed with ALS and was awaiting approval to try a new medication. The article touched me because it described what these drugs can mean to someone with a diagnosis that is fatal. ALS can take the lives of those who are waiting so it’s important to act quickly.
