Alternative Solutions

EdCast’s Corporate Academy was selected as one of the two alternate solutions to ALG. They offer a unique approach to corporate learning as a business-to-business e-learning platform. Leveraging the innovative Open edX learning management system, EdCast promotes an artificial intelligence backed learning platform that offers effective and cost-efficient learning to businesses (EdCast, 2019). Regarded as the “Netflix of Learning”, EdCast focuses on providing valuable training tailoring to the newest generation workforce that operates with a short attention span and a competing backlog of work (McKelvey, 2016).
EdCast’s platform offers many features for individuals looking to enter the e-learning workspace as content developers. EdCast can accept and normalizing multiple content formats for their platform. They also provide technical support for the normalization of this content and sample content reviews. Together with uploading of existing content, EdCast offers unique features such as peer-to-peer mentoring or independent in-person instructors, which could heighten the offering of leadership content the client is looking to develop (McKelvey, 2016). Additionally, EdCast’s technical support is extensive offering everything from onboarding and setup of e-learning content for content developers to technical support for the business platform purchasers. Portability of the platform and ease of use for the individual learner was an important requirement for the client, EdCast offers up an easy-to-use platform on both desktop and mobile devices with multiple positive customer reviews. Alongside these features, EdCast promotes a large course audience with over 1,600 businesses in over 100 countries that currently purchase learning through their platform. EdCast also offers up a uniquely customizable security strategy allowing the content developer to configure security settings per document on their platform. This array of features, provided by the EdCast platform, gave our team great perspective about the capabilities of what it offers in response to the client’s requirements for an e-learning platform.
Holistically, though EdCast offers a variety of features, it presents some shortcomings relative to ALG’s requirements. One of ALG’s primary focuses when developing requirements for the e-learning platform was to ensure the ability to market the learning platform to an audience of learners. As a result, EdCast’s platform presents a problem because it does not offer a marketplace that is accessible by the individual learner. EdCast functions solely as a business-to-business learning platform. This would significantly affect the client’s overall e-learning strategy creating a major organic growth through marketing roadblock if this platform is leveraged. EdCast indicated that there is a 19% transaction fee per transaction, which would be extreme understanding ALG’s proposed cost model. Overall, EdCast offered numerous benefits but fell short in some of the most critical areas. This includes the course audience, marketing for organic growth, and exposure of the learning platform.
Another alternative solution to ALG, Teachable is one of the most suitable online platforms that make it possible for an individual or entity to create as well as sell courses under a unique brand. Several reasons make the site viable for the identified task. One of the reasons includes the idea that the platform provides users with fundamental course creation features. The site also provides individuals with video-driven content, including unlimited storage for the videos. Other strengths include its simplicity. The site provides simple tools, such as a customizable sales platform, that enable users to sell their courses (Mani, 2019). This capability would allow an individual selling an online course to make it as attractive as possible, which is a factor that can facilitate an increase in sales.
In terms of pricing, the plans provided in the site are affordable and allow users the flexibility they desire based on the plan used. The site still offers free plans. Under this plan, the site allows an unlimited number of courses and students. However, individuals are required to pay $1 and a 10% fee for each course sold through the free plan (Mani, 2019). The other paid plans include the basic, professional, and business plans that are billed annually (Mani, 2019). Individuals choosing the basic plan are still charged 5% for the paid courses, but the transaction fees are not charged after upgrading to another level. A user can also price the courses offered through the platform in multiple currencies, which is one of the other strengths of the site.
One of the weaknesses of the teachable platform is the idea that it does not have the site theme feature. All websites using the platform are limited to using the default template. This limitation inhibits users from uploading their logos, define their preferred font, and color their website (Mani, 2019). Even though the default theme in the platform looks appealing, users do not have enough choices for their themes. For this reason, an appropriate recommendation would be recreating the platform to allow users to use their personalized themes, which can make the site more appealing to use.
Regardless of some of the weaknesses, Teachable still has a lot to offer as it allows individuals to create and sell their courses. Conversely, users can deliver their content and engage students easily through the platform. In this regard, Teachable provides users with a more intuitive and flexible course generator including a suitable student discussion system that would allow users to engage several students efficiently. The strong course reporting tools are also beneficial for the users (Mani, 2019). In addition to the functionality of the platform, Teachable provides users with suitable sales and marketing features, including the highly optimized checkout process that supports payment systems such as Apple Pay as well as Google Pay, among others.
