Collect world economic data and use it to create a map of world economics

Collect world economic data and use it to create a map of world economics. Then, write a short interpretative essay of the map. Your purpose in analyzing this data is to discover the spatial relationships among poor, middle income, and rich countries in the world and the connections between these regions.

Final product:

You will draw a map of GNI per capita for selected countries and then write a minimum 500 word essay about the map, answering the following questions:
• What is the spatial pattern for low, mid, and high income countries? Discuss by region or continent.
• Hypothesize…do countries grouped together have any similarities and/or differences? If so, what are those similarities/differences?
• Divide the planet into economic regions. How many economic regions do you think are present on the planet? Where specifically are they? What factors explain your division?

Instructions:

  1. Use the World Population Data Sheet to gather the GNI per capita data for the selected countries and fill out the worksheet on the last page of this instruction sheet. You only need to find the countries on the sheet.
  2. Make your map.
    a. Use an atlas or the textbook to identify where the countries on the list are located and label them on the blank map.
    b. Separate the data into three classes:
    $0-$6,000 (low income)
    $6,001-$16,000 (mid-income)
    $16,001 and more (high income)
    c. Assign a color to each of the three classes. Try to choose three shades of one color. Typically, darker colors express more of a quantity (for example, light blue = low income; medium blue = mid income; dark blue = high income). Color each country with the appropriate color.
    d. Remember to include a title, legend, and your name on the map.
  3. Study your map.
  4. Write your essay.
