Papers must be typed, double-spaced (not 1 1/2), and be as correct as possible in grammar and mechanics. Please number pages. If you refer to texts other than films (which must be cited by director and date in the text), you must cite these texts appropriately. (See the MLA Handbook [at www.mla.org] if you are unclear about appropriate citation.) Film and book titles need to be underlined or put in italics. Identify directors and actors after the first mention of the film or character in parentheses. The paper should be submitted on Canvas as a Word or .rtf file attachment.
Basic assignment: Focus on a single element of a film and analyze its role in the film in an essay of three to four pages. You might focus on a scene, a character, a shot, a sequence, a set, lighting, etc. Whatever you choose, be sure to clearly identify the element–for example, if a scene, by mentioning where it begins and ends–and to describe it in sufficient detail. Note that your paper should be mainly about the element that is your focus, and that larger points need to be explicitly related to it. Below are some suggested topics dealing with the films we have seen since the last paper assignment. You are not required to use these topics. However, if you wish to write about a film not shown in this class, please clear your choice with the instructor in advance.
