Analyze a successfully organized sport mega event that has taken place in the past 40 years
In pairs (or individually) students will analyze a successfully organized sport mega event that has taken place in the past 40 years. The sport mega-event selected must be one of the following: an Olympic Games or Paralympic Games (Summer or Winter) or the Football World Cup (Men’s or Women’s). The analysis can focus on one specific area or it can be more general and cover a few areas. A presentation that consists of no more than seven slides (including the front cover slide and a slide for references at the end) will be delivered across Weeks 7-9. The presentation should be no longer than three minutes in duration. Each student must submit their presentation through Turnitin so a mark can be allocated in Canvas (failure to do so will result in a five-mark penalty). The Turnitin submission must occur on the day of the presentation. (The criteria matrix for Project 1 can be found on the second page of this document). All group members must present in order to receive a mark for this assessment.
Project Milestones
Week 3: Provide your tutor with a brief overview on your ideas for the project to this point i.e. What event do you plan to study? What areas of the event will you explore?
Week 4: Decide whether you will do the project in pairs or individually. Start writing down project ideas. Finalise the idea for the project and start researching the academic and industry literature. In the first instance, examine what the academic literature has to say about managing sport mega-events. Explore academic books and journals such as the Journal of Sport Management (JSM), Sport Management Review (SMR), European Sport Management Quarterly (ESMQ), Managing Sport and Leisure (MSL), Event Management (EM), Leisure Studies (LS), and Sport Marketing Quarterly (SMQ).
Week 5: Discuss your project ideas with your tutor. Continue to research and prepare the presentation.
Week 6: Finalise the presentation.
Weeks 7-9: Presentations take place.
