They held a commitment ceremony with their close friends many years ago, however, Jane’s parents, Joyce and Bob, and sister, Kath, did not attend and refuse to recognize the relationship. Jane has MS that has recently progressed to the point where Carol is unable to care for her without significant assistance. Carol is investigating care options to keep Jane at home but Jane’s parents and sister are insisting on admission to a residential facility. Jane has not nominated a Power of Attorney or Enduring Guardianship.
In relation to this scenario consider and discuss the perspectives of Jane, Carol and Jane’s family and possible courses of action from these perspectives. Elizabeth Jackson is an 86-year-old woman who has been widowed for one year. She lives alone in her own, large home, which was the family home. She has four children and 10 grandchildren, none of whom live in the local area. She is physically well but has recently been diagnosed with early stage dementia. She has no living siblings and most of her friends are either dead or too frail to travel to visit her. She retired from primary school teaching when she was 65 and she and her husband traveled extensively in Australia before he died. She is a keen bridge and golf player but finds both these activities difficult due to a faltering memory and the recent loss of her driver’s license.

Peter Thompson is a fiercely independent 78 year old male who is the sole carer for his wife, Shirley. Peter has significant industrial deafness and refuses to wear his hearing aids. Shirley has Type II diabetes mellitus and is vision impaired. She has never been in paid employment and has never had the need to drive. She is very reliant on Peter who takes great pride in ensuring that all her needs are met. Peter was recently involved in a motor vehicle incident and his license has been suspended.

Case Scenario Four:
Tony Dawson is 79-year-old retired stockman who has lived in a residential aged care facility for the past two years. He is cognitively intact but physically incapacitated due to the effects of chronic diseases; obesity, arthritis, emphysema. His wife, Mary, their children and extended family all live nearby and visit him regularly. He is very unhappy that he has been forced to live in the facility and feels angry with his family for not taking care of him at home. He is also upset that he is not allowed to smoke.
