Access to Genetic Sequencing

Access to Genetic Sequencing

Module 5 Discussion: Access to Genetic Sequencing. Companies like 23andMe and Navigenics (now part of Life Technologies) have tried to offer a service for genetic analysis of individuals for health related purposes. These companies were sent letters stating that their genetic tests are basically medical devices and thus require FDA approval before such services can be offered. Later 23andMe was ordered to stop selling their genetic testing products used for health related purposes (23andMe still sells their genealogical genetic testing products). Two discussion topics:

  1. Do you think it is right for the FDA to stop 23andMe from selling the health-related products until they provide validation data for its intended uses? Please provide an explanation for your answer.
  2. Whole genome sequencing will provide an enormous amount of information about an individual even though we don’t fully know what it all really means. Do you think that people should get their genome sequenced and then hold on to that information? Please explain why.
